Royal City Avenue (RCA) Bangkok

Royal City Avenue (RCA)Bangkok
Royal City Avenue (or just RCA as it is known by locals) is one of the biggest entertainment areas in Bangkok, but as visitors are concerned, probably the least know. RCA is a long road hosting a multitude of different types of bar and clubs. Very much a Thai scene, RCA is frequented by Bangkok’s young scene, mainly university students letting off steam. Lots of variety of music depending on the bar you visit. Multi-million watt sound systems blast out Thai disco, house, R&B, and the usual American / Brit pop.
What’s great about RCA is the wide range of places to eat and drink and the variety of themes in the clubs and restaurants. Catering for the local youth, it’s not an overpriced venue. The new MRT connections have made RCA more accessible and so it is more often finding itself on the tourist map. Be warned though, if you are over 30 you’ll feel old! Great place to visit if you are young and in Bangkok for an extended period, otherwise it’s probably not going to be a high priority against some of the more central entertainment areas.
Details: Only a few of the clubs on RCA have entrance fees. This area is a designated ‘Entertainment Zone’ but the 01:00 curfew applies here like everywhere else.
How to get there: The quickest way to RCA is by MRT or BTS and a quick taxi ride the rest of the way. The nearest MRT is Pharam 9 station, and the nearest BTS Asok or Phrom Phong. From any of these stations the taxi fare should be no more than 50-60 Baht depending on traffic (it is a bit built up the area).
The following buses will get you close to RCA:Bus number: 60 Air-conditioned bus number: 12

Hollywood Bangkok Club

I wanted to post about Hollywood Bangkok Club for a while already, now as I have some pictures for it I can finally do it. Now this is not another massaqge place but the reason why I post it is that it is such a different and very, very Thai club. In a good way. Hollywood Bangkok has been around for ages, I would guess at least 15 years already. The concept of Hollywood Bangkok Club has NOT changed a bit and this place is still absolutely successful considering the amount of people that go to Hollywood Bangkok every week. Located on Rachada Soi 10 (also accessible from Soi it is just a short walk down our favorite road in Bangkok from Rachada Soi 4 (the popular Teenie hangout. Even though I might be a bit too old for it, last time I went to have a bottle of whiskey with some friends at Soi 4 first. Its dirt cheap and a lot of hot girls to look at.
Hollywood is a big place. I would guess, the complete capacity of Hollywood Bangkok is about 1500 people though not all areas are open always. You should buy a bottle of whiskey(a black label goes for a reasonable 1400 Baht, so you don’t pay the entrance. When you enter, you should try to get a table on the main floor which has the best view on the stage (and the dancers later on ). It helps to give 100 Baht to the waiter if he tries to give you a table too far away and tell him that you want to be closer to the stage.
Now there will be a DJ playing techno and house and there will be some dancers next to him. He will change to Hip Hop at times. All the dancers at Hollywood are freaking hot. And I mean really hot. Now every 30 minutes or so, on the other side of the DJ (where the stage is, this is the place you see the girls walking on the pictures), a live band will be playing. They always have a Lady Boy singing at Hollywood Bangkok as the first show. Its a nasty one though. At the end of his show he/she will normally gulp down half a bottle of whiskey…. I couldn’t believe it when I first saw it but it wasn’t fake.
hen the DJ will play again and after that the dancing show of Hollywood Bangkok starts. Now you will get some eye candy. I don’t know where they find these girls but they are awesome. Now they don’t always run around like on the pictures (as this was a special day) but they will not wear much also on all other “normal” days. At about 1 the shows are done and the DJ will keep playing until about 3 in the morning (this was 2 weks ago, so the time might be different now, as 3 is quite long).

Thai Coyoty Girl

Recently, a new law was proposed to stop young girls from taking jobs as Coyote dancers. For the ones who don’t know, a few years back, these type of clubs got really popular. I started noticing this when a club called Forte opened on Sukhumvit Road Bangkok. It was a hit back then. You go with your buddies, get a bottle of whiskey (basically, that is the only thing you can order there) and you have a lot of absolutely hot hostesses walking around. If you like one just call her over and she will give you company. You gotta buy her a drink once in a while but that’s it. The dance shows in these places are wicked as the coyote girls really know what they are doing. It is a pleasure to watch. This is no go go bar though. You should dress up to go there and there are no naked women or anything like that. Forte is still alive but now it is located on one end of RCA road (Royal City Avenue). This is a big street full of clubs for students and young Thais. It is also frequented highly by foreigners.
The new law suggests that the salarys in these clubs are attractive but they make young girls (18, 19, 20, etc.) stay up too late every day and “work” too much. Another official reason is that foreigners shouldn’t get the wrong impression about Thai girls.I don’t know what you are thinking about Bangkok Coyote dancers but I surely don’t want to miss THIS:

This is about what you can expect at clubs like Forte. There is another one called Soprano on Sukhumvit Road Soi 26. It was called Orbit before which was really good but I heard it turned more into a lounge now with not so much dancing anymore. Any comments on Soprano are welcome. The Pent Club is probably my favorite of these clubs.

Bangkok Massage parlors

Bangkok Massage parlors
There are literally thousands of Thai massage parlors in Bangkok. Essentially, there are three types of massage: the soapy massage, the Thai massage and the herbal oil massage. We all know that many massage parlors are little more than a front for prostitution, and in many massage parlors, this extra option is readily available.
This has to be the ultimate entertainment experience in this exciting city, if you have not tried it, you owe it to yourself to try this at least once. Although we are sure that it won't be your last. In the various massage parlors there seems to be a similar procedure.
Upon entering the establishment, you will be lead to a reception area where you will see a group of girls, usually in another room with a one way mirror. While you are admiring the females, you can always get a drink while you take your time to make your choice. Once you have made your selection, just give the manager the name and number(s). The girl will be brought out to greet you, and you could have a drink and chat with her, or simply head to the private room. Be fully aware gentlemen that you will be expected to settle the bill in advance of departing to the room.
Upon reaching the room with your selected escort, you may be offered the opportunity to order another drink, both for yourself and your companion. Chatting is optional, you may wish to progress and head for the type of massage you have selected. Depending on the option that you have chosen, you will first be placed in a soapy bubble bath, pleasurably cleaned up by your companion(s), and if you have chosen the body massage you will get the rubber mattress treatment. If you have not yet had this pleasure, it is widely recommended. Another suggestion, if your budget allows, is the “sandwich” where you get two young ladies to attend to all your needs.

Once you have been dried, and are squeaky clean from the soapy bath and massage, you will be shown to the bed, which is usually round or oval. This is round two of your pleasures, so prepare yourself. You can tell if the young lady is enjoying her time with you about now, since if she did not, she would be reluctant to spend even more time with you. The body massage usually takes about 90 minutes, but can last as long as two and a half hours if your masseuses are happy with the way you are treating them.
If all you are really looking for is a good body massage, then opt for traditional Thai massage, which originated some two and a half thousand years ago. The techniques were passed on originally by word of mouth, then written upon palm leaves. These may be viewed at the Wat Pho temple in Bangkok.

NaNa Plaza Sukumvit 5

- Richard D. Hartman-
In 1981 ‘Nana Plaza’ was a mostly empty mini-mall with the standard run of Thai shops; a pharmacy, a travel agent, a beauty shop and a couple of restaurants (one of which was Lebanese). A small beer bar, Lucky Luke’s was located in the entranceway, neither on Soi 4 nor in Nana Plaza. In that same year, in another nearby part of town, the Rachadapisek Inner Ring Road extension was pushing through the length of Soi Asoke and into the top of Soi 16, widening both to 8 lanes. Ancillary works, which commenced in 1982, included widening Sukhumvit itself to allow for turning lanes into and out of this new stretch of Rachadapisek. This latter widening along Sukhumvit caused the shops in that area of Sukhumvit to close down temporarily while they (literally) cut off the fronts of the buildings and reconstructed new fascia several meters back from the new curb. This seemingly unrelated event was, however, the unwitting catalyst; causing immediate distress to the small group of A-Go-Go bars on Sukhumvit Road between Soi 16 and Soi 14. Some Bangkok regulars may recognize the names of these so-called “Soi 16 Bars” : Rosemary 1 , Rosemary 2 , The Three Roses , the Rainbow Bar , and the Sunshine Bar . These bars had to close almost overnight, with no guarantee as to when they might be able to reopen. Unable to wait, in mid 1982 the Rosemarys (1&2) , The Three Roses and The Rainbow Bar moved into Nana Plaza . These bars are still in Nana Plaza today, however the Rosemarys combined as a single bar when they moved in, while The Rainbow , having gone through some minor name changes, is now back as Rainbow 1 . While it can be said Lucky Luke’s pioneered Nana Plaza , these 3 bars -as a group-, are the 'seminal bars'; they ‘made it all happen’; they brought “A-Go-Go” to what would eventually become one of the largest A-Go-Go Entertainment Areas in Thailand. ( Sunshine was the only “Soi 16 Bar” that didn’t move to Nana Plaza ; it moved to Soi Cowboy , reincarnating as Sunshine Dee Ja , eventually selling out to the Bumble Bee in mid-1994.) Growth of Nana Plaza as a Night Entertainment Areawas slow but sure; on average, less than 2 new bars a year. But despite a slow start, by the year 1990 it had found its way into the Lonely Planet-type guidebooks, and, most agree, was ‘standing on its own two feet’. It had arrived - it had reached ‘critical mass’. Many tend to forget that this was due, in no small part, to a ready-made customer base from the Nana Hotel across the street, and two always-packed-out small hotels within the premises: the Nana Guest House (while it was still really a guest house) and the Royal Siam Guest House . As Nana Plaza completes its second decade as a Night Entertainment Area, longtime residents and returning visitors to Bangkok may still remember some of the earlier ‘landmark’ venues: the Private Dancer , the Mon Cherie , Bubble Gum , Asian Intrigue , XTC (also called for a brief period, ‘ X-tacy ’ but that spelling was frowned upon by the authorities), and Slitz! A Gogo . Some may recall Nana Plaza’s only Japanese bar -ever- Club New Fuchicho which, in early 1993, was bought out by Madison’s . ( Madison’s , also long-gone, is now the G-Spot .) The Hollywood Royal (now the Hollywood Rock) was a breakthrough bar for Nana Plaza , as it was the first Patpong-style bar with 'shows' and greater nudity, and it opened the way for further innovation within the Plaza such as; carousels, 'shower shows' and erotic performance. Some may also remember woodstock when it was a first-rate A-Go-Go with the best sound system in the Plaza, and the Lollipop Mermaidium when it had live mermaids. Growth at Nana Plaza has been steady since then. Ten years ago there were 19 Entertainment venues; five years ago there were 30. Today, at 39 Entertainment Venues, Nana Plaza has, for all intents and purposes, hit a physical plateau; there are very few ‘shop areas’ remaining in which to put another bar. Should it survive the current government’s form-over-substance ‘moral cleansing’, it will continue to be one of the primary A-Go-Go bar Night Entertainment Areas in Thailand for the foreseeable future.

Soi Cowboy ,Ratchada Road
Soi Cowboy is located close to the intersection of Sukhumvit Road and Asoke Road. It is just about 100 meter from the intersection and connects Asoke Road with Soi 23 Sukhumvit, running parallel to Sukhumvit Road. Left far corner of the intersection if you are coming from the direction of Nana, Landmark, Ambassador.
It is a about 300 meter long street, with a total of about 40 small and bigger bars, located on both sides. Famous bars include long Gun, Tilac, both close to Asoke Road. On the other side, close to Soi 23, we find Baccara, Midnite bar, Our place , (and Dollhouse) In between them, a vast array of smaller bars.
Soi Cowboy, which has for a long time been regarded as a more sedate entertainment venue, has recently seen a more active nightlife scene. Different from Nana Plaza, quite a few bars offer topless dancing, nude dancing and shows.
Traditionally, Soi Cowboy was less expensive than other entertainment areas. However, over the last few years, prices have gone up, and beers and liquor drinks now go for between 120 and 140 baht. Lady drinks and soft drinks (even water) are priced above 100 baht.
